For almost sixteen years now, I’ve been doing what Julia Cameron (The Artist’s Way) calls “morning pages.” In the last few years, I have also taken to doing what I think of as “afternoon pages.” I use a different notebook. I think about the story that I am working on. And I write about it, trying to connect some of the pieces. I don’t have any expectations. Or I try not to. I just show up and cogitate. I let myself free-associate. All of these notebooks (morning and afternoon) are starting to pile up; I like the physical evidence of them. They seem to say to me: I was here. I showed up. I tried.
