From a recent issue of Poetry magazine: “One of the qualities essential to being good at reading poetry is also one of the qualities essential to being good at life: a capacity for surprise.”
We long for things to be predictable, definable, understandable.
But all of the joy and wonder, the pain and terror—everything that makes us feel alive—comes in the surprise.
I want to be not afraid of the surprise.
I want to love the unknowable.
I want to see some flash of inexplicable brilliance out of the corner of my eye and turn toward it, not away.
