There’s a Peanuts cartoon, a Sunday strip, which shows Snoopy on top of his doghouse with a typewriter. Most of the fourteen panels are given over to Snoopy pacing back and forth, looking thoughtful and slightly pompous. He types “It” and after a good long while he types “was.” By the end of the strip he has a complete sentence (“It was a dark and stormy night”) and a keen insight (“Good writing is hard work.”). I’ve been thinking about this strip a lot recently. Not because I’ve been doing so much pacing around (I have); and not because writing is hard (it is), but because I’ve got some deep, desperate hope that the dog will finish this rewrite for me.
Here he is.
Talk about a desperate hope.
I persevere.
