I grew up with a Deluxe Golden Book version of Carlo Collodi’s Pinocchio, illustrated by Sergio Rizzato. Rizzato’s detailed renderings of Pinocchio’s friend (and voice of reason) “The Talking Cricket,” fascinated me as a kid and engendered in me a lifelong love of crickets. All of this is a round-about way of saying that I went walking this morning without the headphones because I wanted to listen to the cicadas. What I heard instead was a single cricket. I spent some down on my hands and knees trying to find him, and then I just gave up and sat on the sidewalk and listened. Talk about the voice of reason. It was a beautiful song.
