On Friday night, I was at the opening of the Children’s Theatre Company’s production of Mercy Watson to the Rescue; and there was this wonderful moment where Eugenia Lincoln was standing on stage, screaming for her cat General Washington, demanding that he come home. Eugenia Lincoln’s sister, Baby, suggests that maybe Eugenia should promise General Washington belly rubs and pie and sweet words if he comes home. Eugenia Lincoln looks at the audience and says something like “Who wants belly rubs? Who wants to be fed pie and called ‘sweetie?’”
And from somewhere in the audience comes this high, sweet voice, a kid who says: I do!
It’s what we all want, isn’t it?
To come home, to be loved.
And also: to laugh.
