A friend sent me this picture from the Milwaukee Public Museum: a humpback whale skeleton strung with lights. It’s like looking up at the night sky in some dark wood. If you squint, the bones become something winged, preparing to take flight. I like to think that inside we are all lit that way. And that sometimes—when we look up or when we stop and turn back or when someone takes our hand–we remember it, the lights inside of us, how we are strung with some incandescence, wired to shine.
