Kids often ask me if I illustrate my own books.
My answer is usually something along the lines of “how I wish I could. Alas, I can’t draw my way out of a paper bag.”
And I can’t draw.
But yet, I love to doodle.
I decided a couple of weeks ago to treat myself to a tin of colored pencils and to give in to the urge to play on paper.
I’m having a really good time.
And I’ve discovered something fascinating as I’ve doodled and hummed along: drawing unlocks the part of my brain where the stories are.
I draw a face, and, unexpectedly, I understand something about the characters in the story I’m working on.
All of which is to say: play, play and play some more.
