On Friday morning, I flew to California to meet Minal Saldivar, the winner of Scholastic’s Raymie Nightingale Writing Contest.
Minal wrote an essay about friendship—the power of it, the delicacy of it, the give-and-take of it, and the lastingness of it.
Minal writes about an argument she had with her best friend, Izzy:
“The most vivid part of this memory was when we solved our conflict. We both wanted to be right and the other to be wrong . . . Izzy started crying after we came back from lunch and apologized to me. I tried to stay mad, but what kind of kindergartner wouldn’t apologize to their new-found friend who was crying?”
Those are wise words, Minal.
It was a great honor to meet you, to stand with you in front of your classmates at Blair and to hear them cheer for you, and for the words you wrote about love and understanding and friendship.
