I have been thinking a lot about a letter I received last week from a high school librarian.
She wrote to tell me that a couple of boys keep checking The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane out of the library.
And it thrilled me, of course, to think about high school boys reading a book about a china rabbit, about love and loss.
But the reason I can’t stop thinking about the letter is because of the librarian.
Because she noticed what the boys are reading.
Because she is there, in that school, putting books in kids’ hands.
It is a sacred and powerful act–placing a book in someone’s hands.
So as the school year starts, I want to say thank you to all you school librarians.
You put books in my hands, too.
