I’ve got a small hole in the floorboard of my kitchen.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve caught sight of it and felt my heart lift.
Why?
Because I think—just for a second—what if there are Borrowers living there?
This is what I love about books for children.
They gave me (and still give me) what I think of as peripheral magic—magic that you catch out of the corner of your eye.
“Why do you write books for kids?”
People ask me that question all the time.
I guess the answer is because of hope and wonder and peripheral magic.
I never want to stop thinking that Borrowers might be somewhere nearby.
