In a recent signing line, a small girl holding a copy of Because of Winn-Dixie.
Me: Do you want me to sign that?
Small girl shakes her head.
Me: Okay. Um.
Small girl (whispering): Do you have a dog?
Me: I do have a dog. Do you?
Small girl nods her head very vigorously.
Me: It’s the best thing, isn’t it?
(Small girl takes a step toward me. She leans toward me).
Small girl (speaking softly): Her name is Albertine. And we call her Albert. And it makes us all laugh. It makes us happy.
And then this child gives me the most radiant smile and walks away still holding on to her copy of Winn-Dixie.
Albertine, Albert–all you dogs out there–you make us happy.
