In Dallas, at a signing for Half Price Books, a mother came through the line with her daughter.
The mother said, “My daughter made me read this book,” and she put The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane down on the table.
“I came home from work and she told me I had to read it right now, that I had to read it right away. And I told her I was too busy, and I was too tired. And then I sat down and read the book later that evening when she was already in bed. And do you know what I did when I was finished?”
I shook my head.
She said, “I went and woke her up and said: ‘you were right.’”
I looked over at the daughter.
I said, “Really?”
She said, “Really.”
I said, “Thank you. Both of you. Thank you.”
And now I will say it again here:
Thank you to daughters who tell mothers to read certain books.
Thank you to mothers who listen to their daughters.
Thank you to everyone who believes in sharing stories.
