I was in the checkout line at the grocery store when a woman came up to me and said, “You’re going to love this story. I read to my daughter every night.”
“Oh,” I said, “that makes me happy.”
“But wait,” said the woman. “Here’s the thing you’re going to love. She’s three years old and we’ve been reading your piglet story every night for the last week.”
“Oh,” I said, “thank you.”
“Wait,” said the woman. “You’re really going to love this. I went into her room late last night and she was awake and I could hear her talking. I thought maybe she was talking in her sleep. But then I got closer and I could hear her saying, ‘She was entirely unpredictable. She was not at all ordinary. And she was very, very loved.’ I said, ‘Sweetie, what are you doing?’ And do you know what she said?”
I shook my head.
“She said, ‘I’m saying the important words.’”
“Oh,” I said. “You’re right. I love it.”
And suddenly, I felt like crying.
