TWO EUGENIA STORIES
At the Carle Museum on Saturday, a young girl came through the line and said:
“I love that book about Eugenia Lincoln. Guess what I asked for after I read it?”
“What?” I said.
“An accordion,” she said.
“You’re kidding! Did you get it?”
“I did! I got an accordion.”
“Tell her what the accordion brings you,” said the girl’s mother.
“Joy,” said the girl.
“Joy,” I said. “Joy. That’s what you are bringing me right now.”
And on Sunday, at a signing with Brookline Booksmith a family came through the line and told me how much they love the Deckawoo Drive books.
“We just planted a tree in our front yard,” said the mother.
“We named the tree Eugenia Lincoln!” said one of the kids.
“You named the tree Eugenia Lincoln?” I said.
“We did!” they said together.
On the plane ride home, I thought: I am going to plant a tree and name it Eugenia Lincoln, too!
And then I thought: Joy, joy.
Joy.
