I was in California last week and I had a child come up to me and say: “You know how Despereaux’s mother arrived at the castle in the luggage of a visiting diplomat?”
“Yes,” I said. “I do know.”
“Well,” said this child, “do you have mice in your suitcase?”
“I suppose you could say that there are metaphorical mice in my suitcase,” I said.
The kid gave me a stern look. “This is the kind of question where you can only answer ‘yes’ or ‘no,’” he said.
“Oh okay,” I said. “Then the answer is ‘yes.’”
“That’s what I thought,” said the kid. “That’s exactly what I thought.”
Can I say?
This whole exchange almost made me levitate with delight.
