Maddy, who is five years old, asked me this question in a recent letter.
People often ask writers where their ideas come from.
The answer is complicated; but sometimes, a story shows up when you ask the right question.
For me, “What is Eugenia’s middle name?” is the right question.
I thanked Maddy.
