Several years ago, on Thanksgiving Day, I was walking to a friend’s house.
A man crossed the sidewalk in front of me, opened his car door and then turned to me and said, “I was gone for five minutes at the most. That’s all.”
“How’s that?” I said.
“She ate the entire pie. In five minutes. Under five minutes.”
“Who did?”
He pointed to the dog sitting in the backseat. Crumbs were in her whiskers, and she was staring off into the distance with a thoughtful look on her face.
“The whole pie,” said the man again.
“I’m sorry,” I told him. “Happy Thanksgiving, anyway.”
“Right,” said the man.
When the pie comes my way today, I will think of that dog and her crumb-filled whiskers and the look on her face—thoughtful, yes, but also wonderstruck, joyful.
Happy Thanksgiving to all of you.
I wish you wonder and joy. And pie.
