When I was a kid, I would sometimes receive the special treat of candy made from maple sugar.
The candy came in different, enchanting shapes—leaves, flowers, people.
Maple candies figure in The Beatryce Prophecy.
A few days after Christmas, I received a package from Sophie Blackall who made the art for Beatryce’s story.
Inside the package: a little box of maple candies.
Suddenly, I was eight years old again.
I thought: I won’t eat them. They’re too precious.
And then I thought: No, I will eat them. I need the sweetness, the enchantment.
