“What’s it feel like to know all these people read your books?”
A ten-year old asked me that question when I was signing books at the Tucson Festival of Books.
I looked at her and said, “It’s unbelievable. I don’t have words for it.”
“Okay,” she said. “Well, maybe if you work on it, you can come up with some words to describe the feeling.”
I thought of that exchange yesterday, when I received a letter from Avery, a second grader, who wrote to tell me that she had never heard of me until her teacher, Mrs. Logar, introduced her to The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane and The Tale of Despereaux. She signed her letter with the words “stories are light.”
How does it feel to know that people read my books?
Here are the words: incandescent, radiant, miraculous.
