I met a mother and her four-year-old daughter on a recent walk.
Mother: Honey, this is the lady who wrote the books about Mercy!
Child: Mercy Watson.
Mother: Yes. Mercy Watson!
Me: Hi. Do you like Mercy Watson?
Child: (silent nod)
Mother: This lady made up Mercy and her stories. Can you believe it?
Child: No.
Me: No?
Child: No.
Me: Okay.
Mother: Honey.
Child (smiles and points at me): Mercy Watson made YOU up.
Me: That’s the smartest thing anyone has said to me all week.
Child: Probably.

And people wonder why I write for kids.
