“I’m supposed to figure out what the themes are in your books and the theme I have come up with is light. Is that right and why are you so obsessed with light?”

Dear Jason,
The word “theme” always makes me nervous. I don’t write stories with themes in mind, but I can see a theme when someone points it out to me.
So. Is light a theme in my books? I think so. All I can tell you is that I am always on the lookout for light. I kind of feel like that is my job—to keep my eyes open for all the things that shine. And that, I guess, is a theme.
