When I was a kid, my mother took my brother and me to the Nutcracker ballet every year; and every year—even though I knew the story and how it would unfold—I was utterly transported. I left the theater feeling as if I had just dreamed the most fantastic dream. The Nutcracker made me believe in magic.
When I attended the Minnesota Opera’s production of Edward Tulane last month, I was dazzled, enchanted.
I wonder sometimes, if the whole thing was a dream.
But each time I walk into my house, there’s Edward–sitting in a chair in my dining room.
The rabbit is a gift from the Costume Department at the Minnesota Opera. When I see him, my heart lifts up inside of me and I think: oh, it wasn’t a dream; it was magic.
