“FOR PROGRESS IN WRITING”
I found the lapel pin when I was cleaning off a shelf.
I had to put on my glasses to read the tiny words imprinted on it in gold.
I can’t remember when I received the pin.
My guess is that it was sometime in elementary school—almost half a century ago.
I’ve held onto the pin through five apartments, three houses, and more rewrites than I can count.
I’m going to keep it on my desk, where I can see it.
It cheers me to think that someone recognized that the child-me had made progress.
And it cheers me, too, to think that all these years later, there is still progress to be made–stories waiting to be told.
