When I was very small, I remember overhearing my father talk to my grandmother in Italian.
I couldn’t understand what they were saying, but the sound of the words was beautiful to me.
Recently, I received an Italian edition of The Tale of Despereaux.
When I opened the book and saw those words about light and dark, and stories and trust, I felt like a kid again–listening, hoping.
“The world is dark, and light is precious.
Come closer, dear reader.
You must trust me.
I am telling you a story.”
