When I talk to kids about writing—about becoming a writer—I show them a picture of me in my Brownie uniform in second grade.
I tell them that it never occurred to me at that age that I could be a writer.
I was a kid who loved to read.
Books to me were magic.
Where in the world would I get the courage to try and make magic?
And then I tell them how it happened–how I dared, and how they can dare, too.
I’m thinking about all of this now as I start rewriting a novel.
Truth be told, I don’t feel very daring.
But I know what to do: Show up. Do the work. Every. Day.
In the words of Shel Silverstein: “Anything can happen, child. Anything can be.”
