Ann Marie (who is eleven years old) sent me a letter pointing out that in three of my books (The Tiger Rising and Flora and Ulysses and Raymie Nightingale) a tiny, yellow bird shows up.
And then she says “Why?”
I was happy to inform Ann Marie that she is the only reader who has ever picked up on those birds.
As for the “why” of them showing up again and again–I don’t really know.
I can only think that those little yellow birds feel to me like harbingers of hope and wonder.
