THINGS THAT NEVER FAIL TO CHEER ME UP, PART TWO: ASSISTANT PIG-KEEPERS
“Most of us are called on to perform tasks far beyond what we believe we can do. Our capabilities seldom match our aspirations, and we are often woefully unprepared. To this extent, we are all Assistant Pig-Keepers at heart.”
I wrote down these words (from Lloyd Alexander’s marvelous The Book of Three) eighteen years ago; and every few years, I go in search of the quote again. Yesterday, I opened a book and a scrap of paper fluttered out. And there they were, those beautiful words, that much-needed reminder that when it comes to writing a novel, I am, at heart, an Assistant Pig-Keeper.
