I have a friend who heard a cooing noise coming from her fireplace and thought that a pigeon was trapped in the chimney.
She called a wild animal removal service.
It turned out that the pigeon was, in fact, a squirrel.
The man from the wild animal removal service put on gloves and caught the squirrel.
And then he asked my friend if she wanted to feel “something cool.”
When she said “yes,” he had her put her finger on the squirrel’s chest–right directly over the beating heart.
The animal removal guy took the squirrel and set it loose in the woods.
I keep thinking about that man and how decent he must be, how gentle and kind.
And I keep thinking what a privilege it is—to touch another being’s heart.
