On Friday night, I stood with a friend on a frozen lake in Northern Minnesota and waited for the moon to rise. We waited a long time; nothing happened. We turned around to head back inside and, hey presto, there it was. The moon! We had been looking in the wrong direction. It cheers me up no end to think about myself standing out there in single digit weather waiting for some great light only to have it sneak up behind me. It’s a lot like writing a story. You have to be willing to put your boots on and go and stand out in the middle of nowhere. You have to wait. Chances are you are going to make a fool of yourself. But if you stand out there long enough, the light will find you. Or you will find it. Attached: a picture of the sunrise up at the cabin. I was facing the right direction for that one.
