That picture I posted a few weeks ago of me in my Brownie uniform is from my second grade class picture. Mrs. Boyette was our teacher that year. She is standing at the back of the class beside a chalkboard with these words written on it: “Feb. 28. 1972. Be a Good Citizen. You don’t have to be old to be great. Great people start being great when they are young. They are fair, honest, and helpful.”
Why do those words break my heart?
“I tried,” I want to say to Mrs. Boyette. “I’m trying. I keep trying.”
