FURTHER RUMINATIONS ON THE “EDITORIAL LETTER”
The editorial letter for Because of Winn-Dixie suggested that I add more characters. I spent a lot of time bemoaning this outrageous impossibility (“It’s like presenting someone with a nice cake that you’ve baked and iced and having them taste it and say: ‘yes, well. It would be better if you added more eggs.’ It’s impossible! It can’t be done!” And etc.).
And then, at some point, I started the novel over again.
I added a few characters. The story deepened. It became more joyous, more complicated. That’s what an editorial letter does.
Thank you to all of you for your light, your faith in me and in stories.
