I’ve got a chipmunk living in a hole in the stairs by my back door.
She comes out and sits on the steps in the late afternoon.
She arranges herself in a patch of sunlight.
I’ve learned to round the corner of the house slowly in the afternoon.
That way I don’t startle her.
That way I can stand and admire her.
I often feel like a chipmunk myself—impossibly small in a very large world.
So it is good to see this chipmunk sitting in the sunlight, looking straight at me, meeting the world head-on.
